This song means a lot to me because I wrote it after my grandpa passed away. This was my first experience with death following a split from spirituality. Writing this song helped me form some new beliefs about what death is and what it means for those who are left to cope with loss.
Plus I got my dad into the studio to lay down to those watery guitar leads.
lyrics
Lyrics:
It's too early for bad news, so I ignore the phone
still death finds me (sweet voice through the wall)
I close my eyes for the numbness of sleep,
but the memories come flooding back to me
the memories I recall
Mr. Green drove a yellow Cadillac
from the California grass to the red desert sands
where the blue sky turns purple when the orange sun sets
In Ajo, Arizona
Desert peace
Bittersweet release
Bears with no teeth, sequoia trees
from holes in the wall to fine cuisine
long drives, titanium knees
growing gardens, alien memories
Though memories are ours and ours alone,
if we share them earnestly and join in remembering,
we set them free
Dark clouds need silver linings
when time healed the wounds,
I found wisdom in the scars that ensued
Death is not my, death is not my enemy
It is something in-between
